Bird watching in Nyungwe National Park is world-class, with the park being recognized as Rwanda’s premier birding destination and one of the most important in the Albertine Rift region. Over 320 bird species have been recorded in Nyungwe, including an astonishing 29 Albertine Rift endemics—species found only in this region and nowhere else in the world.

Nyungwe is home to more than 275 bird species, making it the region's most important birding site. They include the spectacular Rwenzori turaco, the secretive red-chested alethe, and several iridescent sunbirds. Equally remarkable are the perpetually honking giant hornbills that crash through the forest canopy, and the stunning great blue turaco, an outlandishly blue, red, and green bird.

Notable Bird Species in Nyungwe:

Famous for Albertine Rift endemics such as the Red-collared Babbler, Albertine Owlet, Rockefeller’s Sunbird, Regal Sunbird, Handsome Francolin, Grauer’s Swamp Warbler, Shelley’s Crimsonwing, and Rwenzori Batis.

Other highly sought-after species include the Great Blue Turaco, Paradise Flycatcher, and various forest hornbills, which are known for their striking looks and calls.
