Black and White Colobus Monkeys - Nyungwe Forest National Park
Large troops of black and white colobus monkeys reside in Nyungwe Forest. These primates often travel in groups of over 300 individuals.

What Makes Nyungwe Special:
Extraordinarily large troops: While most colobus species live in small troops, the population in Nyungwe is known to form groups of up to 400 or more individuals—the largest troop size recorded for this species anywhere in Africa.
A unique subspecies: The specific colobus found here is the Rwenzori black-and-white colobus (Colobus angolensis rwenzorii), a subspecies of the Angolan colobus.
Arboreal acrobats: The monkeys spend most of their time high in the forest canopy, moving with exceptional agility. They have specially adapted, reduced thumbs that aid in their hook-like grip on branches, allowing them to leap gracefully from tree to tree.
