This is a 1-day gorilla tracking tour in Rwanda, which starts and ends in Kigali, Rwanda. Having a chance to see some of the last remaining 700 mountain gorillas in the world is a wonderful experience.
Imagine standing just a few feet from a massive, silver-backed mountain gorilla, his eyes meeting yours with a profound and gentle curiosity. In Rwanda, this isn't a fantasy—it's a humbling reality. A gorilla trekking safari in Volcanoes National Park offers one of the most intimate and unforgettable wildlife encounters on Earth, and it's an experience that actively contributes to the survival of these critically endangered apes.
What to expect on your trek
The day begins early at the park headquarters with a briefing on the trekking rules and conservation efforts. You are then assigned to a group of eight trekkers and a specific gorilla family. Experienced trackers and guides lead you into the bamboo forest, clearing paths with their machetes. The hike can last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the gorilla family's location.
Upon finding the gorillas, you will have one precious hour to observe them. You'll witness them interacting, foraging, and playing. This is your chance to observe their human-like expressions and family dynamics, creating a primal connection that is both powerful and peaceful. The cost of your permit directly supports these conservation programs, allowing local communities to thrive and helping the gorilla population recover.

Rwanda Gorilla tracking in Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park is nestled in the Virunga mountain range, a region of stunning Afromontane forests and misty volcanic peaks that provides a perfect, lush habitat for mountain gorillas. The park's well-organized trekking system ensures a safe and respectful experience for both visitors and gorillas, with highly trained guides leading small groups to one of the park's habituated gorilla families.
We will pick you at 5:30 am from where you will be staying in Kigali then drive to Volcanoes National Park, arrive on time at 7:00 am for registration and briefing about Gorilla trekking after drive to the base of the mountains where trekking starts accompanied by park rangers, Your driver guide will wait for you at the base of the mountain until you will finish trekking.
Have lunch at Hotel Muhabura, then after lunch, drive back to Kigali and drop you off where you will be staying or Airport. End of the tour.
