CHIMPANZEE TREKS IN VIRUNGA / TONGO FOREST
The Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo is one of Africa’s most biodiverse regions, famous for its mountain gorillas, active volcanoes, and stunning landscapes. But beyond gorilla encounters, Virunga also offers a rare and unforgettable experience — chimpanzee trekking in the Tongo Forest.
The Tongo Forest, located within Virunga’s lush highlands, is home to a large population of chimpanzees that have been habituated to human presence through years of careful conservation work. This gives visitors the opportunity to observe these intelligent primates in their natural environment without disturbing their daily lives.
Chimpanzee treks usually start early in the morning, as this is when the chimps are most active. Visitors, guided by experienced trackers, follow the sounds of calls, drumming on tree trunks, and fresh nests to locate the troop. Along the way, you may also encounter other forest species such as colobus monkeys, baboons, and an incredible variety of birds and butterflies.
What makes chimpanzee trekking unique is the chance to witness their complex social behavior up close. From playful juveniles swinging in the canopy to adults foraging, grooming, and communicating, every moment provides a deeper understanding of their remarkable intelligence and close genetic link to humans.
The Tongo experience is not just about tourism; it also plays a vital role in conservation. Trekking permits help fund the protection of both chimpanzees and their fragile forest habitat, while also supporting local communities living around the park.
For adventurous travelers, chimpanzee trekking in Virunga’s Tongo Forest is an intimate and enriching experience — offering a powerful connection to one of our closest relatives in the wild, set against the backdrop of Africa’s most dramatic landscapes.
TOUR PROGRAM:
The day begins when Community Trackers leave their camp at 3:00 AM, enter the forest at 4:00 AM, and await the first chimp calls. Having heard and located the chimps, they remain with them until 7:00 AM, when their precise location is communicated over the radio to the Virunga National Park guide.
Leading the group of 4-6 tourists is one guide and one ranger. The tourists remain with the chimps for up to one hour.
