Ubumwe Community Visit: Walking or Cycling tour

In part owing to the 1994 genocide, Rwanda has a disproportionate number of physically and mentally disabled people. Most have no option but to live as street beggars.

The Ubumwe Center is a place where adults with disabilities and their children are given an alternative, where they can be educated, learn skills, work, and ultimately take control of their own lives.

The Ubumwe Center serves more than 130 children and adults with counseling, primary education, vocational training, and workshop employment. Founded with the mission of creating opportunities for people with disabilities and disadvantaged youth, the center has become a symbol of hope and resilience in Rwanda.

What makes the Ubumwe Center special is its focus on inclusion and dignity. It not only empowers individuals with practical skills but also fosters self-confidence, social connection, and community respect. Visitors to Gisenyi can tour the center, interact with students, and even purchase handmade crafts that directly support its programs.

A visit to Ubumwe Center is more than just a stop on a Rwandan itinerary — it’s a chance to witness the power of community-driven change and contribute to a future where everyone, regardless of ability, has the chance to succeed.

By Cycling Tour:

From rolling green hills to volcanic mountains and sparkling lakes, every route immerses travelers in breathtaking views and authentic cultural experiences.

Cycling enthusiasts can take on the famous Congo Nile Trail, which runs along the shores of Lake Kivu, passing through vibrant villages, coffee plantations, and lush forests. Walking tours, on the other hand, provide a slower pace, allowing visitors to connect deeply with Rwanda’s communities, wildlife, and traditions.

It provides a safe, stimulating, and nurturing environment for local children who are both healthy and have a disability. During this tour, you may even wish to combine your educational visit with some practical work with both adults and children.
