Volcanoes National Park - Golden Monkey

Golden Monkeys in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park are endangered, playful primates known for their golden-orange fur and bamboo-rich high-altitude habitats. Visitors can trek to see them up close, with habituated groups available for observation in the dense forests at the base of the volcanoes. The activity offers a chance to witness their social behavior, including their energetic acrobatics and communal lifestyle, and is often combined with other wildlife encounters.

Program

Tour offers guided walks to observe a fully habituated group of rare Golden Monkeys. This is a completely different experience from gorilla tracking, as the monkeys are smaller, nimbler, and may be harder to locate and follow.

However, this is still an opportunity for a superb quality sighting of a rare and brightly colored monkey. Although there may be another group somewhere in the Nyungwe Forest, this is believed to be the only viable population.

What to Expect on a Golden Monkey Trek

A Playful Primate Experience:

Golden monkeys are lively and curious, often found jumping through bamboo, grooming each other, or foraging for food.

Habituated Groups:

To allow for observation, two groups of golden monkeys have been habituated, meaning they are accustomed to the presence of tourists.

Less Demanding Than Gorilla Treks:

The trek to find golden monkeys is generally less challenging than mountain gorilla trekking, as they are often found closer to the park's edge.

Observing Natural Behavior:

You'll have the chance to see them engaging in their daily routines, such as eating bamboo, playing, and communicating.
