Morning meet and greet at your hotel with a tour guide from Green Hills Ecotours. Then drive or bike to the volcano's hills, where you will visit the Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village, based in the community bordering Parc National des Volcans.

Iby’iwacu Cultural Village (also called Gorilla Guardians Village) is a cultural tourism site in Rwanda, near Volcanoes National Park.

At the village, you will have a wonderful, interactive experience, learning all about Rwandan traditions, culture, song, and dance.

You can participate in local dances and drumming, all while wearing traditional local “Umushanana” dress; shooting arrows, attending a traditional healer's medicine show, you will also have the opportunity to sample local food and banana beer, and visit a local household or school.

As well, you can choose to visit some of the local community projects and co-operatives to see, first hand, how your travel with Green Hills Ecotours contributes to making a difference in conserving the environment and transforming people's lives.

After the visit, you will return to your hotel, where this tour ends.

What makes Iby'iwacu unique?

From poachers to protectors: The village was founded to provide former poachers with an alternative, sustainable income. Today, the very people who once hunted mountain gorillas have become guardians of their heritage and the wildlife.

Authentic cultural immersion: This is a place for genuine connection. Engage with local community members and learn about their way of life through hands-on activities and captivating performances.

Support sustainable tourism: Every visit directly supports the community, funding local schools, health clinics, and entrepreneurship programs. It’s a rewarding way to ensure your travels have a positive impact.

Location: Nyabigoma cell, Kinigi Sector, Musanze District, Northern Province, Rwanda — close to the trailheads for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park.

Good to bring: Comfortable walking shoes; modest clothing; camera (ask permission before photographing people); some cash for crafts or tips.
